Charlton Ath v MK Dons Preview

Milton Keynes Dons – Franchise FC to many – come to The Valley looking for three points to propel them into the hunt for an automatic promotion spot.

The local paper in Wimbledon is running a campaign to get the Buckinghamshire outfit to drop ‘Dons’ from their name. The old Wimbledon were dying at Selhurst Park, a move away seemed their only salvation. Dublin was mooted as a possible destination before they eventually upped sticks and moved north.

That move prompted the formation of AFC Wimbledon in 2002 and their progress to the Football League has been little short of spectacular. MK Dons chairman, Pete Winkleman, handed over the Wimbledon trophies to the phoenix club and things quietened down before the ‘Drop The Dons’ campaign. One fact that the paper should consider is that in their meteoric rise, AFC Wimbledon have never played in Wimbledon. I wonder if they will think it appropriate to run a campaign for AFC Wimbledon to drop ‘Wimbledon’ from their name?

MK Dons will arrive at The Valley sharing the same affliction Charlton have had recently, finding goals hard to come by. In their last seven matches in all competitions, they have scored just seven times.

Former Charlton starlet, Charlie Macdonald, is the type of striker who has caused Taylor and Morrison problems in the past. A touch of class was added recently when Alan Smith was secured on loan from Newcastle. The fiery Smith was predictably booked in the 1-1 draw at Huddersfield.

Chris Powell has been able to field a settled team for most of the season but chose to give Bradley Wright-Phillips a rest against Bury. The Addicks top scorer is likely to be restored to the front line tonight and the break should have rejuvenated some tired limbs in the Charlton ranks. Powell may start with this team:

Hamer; Solly, Taylor, Morrison, Wiggins; Green, Stephens, Hollands, Jackson; Kermorgant, Wright-Phillips.

Subs: Sullivan, Cort, Pritchard, Clarke, Haynes.

The referee will be Keith Stroud from Hampshire.

Karl Robinson’s team like to play football and will not come to The Valley looking for just a point. They have some good players and the Addicks will have to be wary. The game will be tight and it would be no surprise if it ended in stalemate.

Some bookmakers have installed former Charlton boss, Alan Curbishley, as favourite to succeed Mick McCarthy as manager of Wolves. Curbs is a manager who builds things up slowly and solidly and perhaps the job at Molineux is not best suited to him. Effectively, the new manager has thirteen games to garner enough points to keep Wolves up.

An instant impact manager in the Warnock or Redknapp mould is more what they need at the moment.
